Nick Cave to release entire book about a song

Sometimes, things are better left unsaid. Learn too much about Strawberry Fields and they lose their psychedelic allure, press Radiohead on Hail to the Thief's album title and their politics seem immature. But restraint has never been Nick Cave's strong suit and now he's not just offering glimpses into his work - he's illuminating it in cold, hard print. This summer, Cave will release a hardback book dedicated to Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, the title song from the Bad Seeds' last album. And more than share a little trivia, Cave's promised to chronicle the song's origin, history and mystery.

On the bright side, the book's not very big.

July 8 will see the publication of the book version of Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!, replete with triple exclamation marks. It's a 40-page, hardback containing all sorts of notes, photos, handwritten lyrics, and the story of the song's creation. A three-inch CD is also included.

Cave's gift for hyperbole makes him a natural writer of press releases. "[This book] is a curiosity," he wrote in a statement, "that deals with the preparation and final glorious outcome of a project that began on the back of an envelope, a literal 'scrap' of an idea and ended up evolving into a genuine cultural icon and classic rock'n'roll song."

"The song, which is a comic re-imagining of the Lazarus myth (placing the recently 'risen' Lazarus in 70s New York), is accompanied by an eight-foot-square light sculpture, employing over 750 light bulbs, built by [Sue] Webster and [Tim] Noble. This little book documents the journey of this mammoth collaboration."

If this were anyone but Nick Cave, we would at this stage make fun of his exaggerations. But, to be honest, we're nervous about the Aussie's temper. No less than Mark E Smith fell victim to it on Monday, as Cave ripped into the Fall frontman on Xfm.

"Have you read [Smith's autobiography] Renegade?" Cave asked. "It's sad. It's one of the most whingy, whiney and snivelling things I've ever read in my life. He's not a curmudgeon, but he snivels and moans and whines. I love him very much but he snivels. He should reach for the tissues!"

Dr Phil visits Spears during hospital stay

Pop singer Britney Spears has reportedly received a visit from television therapist Dr Phil McGraw.
Spears reportedly received the visit during her stay at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, where she was admitted following a custody dispute over her two young children at her home.
Spears was taken to the hospital for evaluation after police officers observed her to be under the influence of an unknown substance. She was discharged on Saturday.
According to People magazine, Dr Phil McGraw visited the singer and her family during her stay in hospital.
Sam Lufti, a friend of the singer, said: "I witnessed Dr Phil being incredibly influential in helping the family unite. His meeting with Britney has certainly made a positive impact instilling seeds of encouragement and reality within her."
He also said: "In the near future it is likely that more information may be shared with the public with the hopes of better understanding a situation as serious as this."
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has now ordered Spears' children to be placed in the sole care of her ex-husband Kevin Federline, suspending the pop star's visitation rights until "further order of the court".
A hearing has been set for 14 January which will determine how the custody battle will proceed.

Al Gore - Officials Hit Hbo Documentary On Florida Recount

Former Secretary of State Warren Christopher, who represented the Al Gore team during
the 2004 Florida recount, has denounced the HBO drama Recount, scheduled to
air on May 25. In an interview with today's (Thursday) New York Times, Christophe
r said that he had asked to see a script of the film before production began but
never received one. After reviewing a transcript provided by the Times, Christopher
said that he was stunned. "Much of what the author has written about me is pure f
iction," he said. "It contained events that never occurred, words I never spoke and
decisions attributed to me that I never made." Bill Daley, Gore's campaign chairman,
who said that the filmmakers agreed to make changes in the script about his role
in the recount, called the depiction of Christopher "absolute fantasy." Even James
Baker, the chief Republican adviser at the time, who is depicted in the film as outsmarting
Christopher at every turn, commented, "I don't think I was as ruthless as the movie
portrays me, and I know he was not as wimpish as it makes him appear." Screenwriter
Danny Strong, who interviewed the three men, acknowledged that he decided not to
send Christopher the script "because I didn't feel that he was being totally candid
in our interview." Meanwhile, the drama is getting some solid reviews. Syndicated
columnist Liz Smith called it "one of the most viscerally powerful, fast-moving,
literate, magnificently acted roller-coaster rides ever put on-screen."

Jagger assassination plot revealed

Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger survived an assassination attempt because a boat carrying his would-be killers was caught in a storm, according to a new documentary.
'The FBI at 100', a new BBC Radio 4 documentary, has revealed that members of the Hells Angels gang planned to assassinate Jagger nearly 40 years ago.
Tom Mangold, who presents the series, told the Sunday Telegraph newspaper that Jagger fell out with the Hells Angels after a member of the gang killed a fan during the band's infamous free concert at Altamont in 1969.
During the concert, for which the group had hired the local chapter to provide security, the gang terrorised the crowd and were reportedly offended by Jagger's effeminate dancing.
Later 18-year-old fan Meredith Hunter was stabbed to death in front of the stage. A Hells Angel was tried for Hunter's murder but claimed self-defence and was acquitted.
According to the documentary, the Hells Angels felt they had been duped by Jagger as fingers were pointed in the aftermath of the concert.
Former special agent Mark Young said in the documentary that a boatload of Hells Angels set out to take revenge on Jagger at his holiday home in the Hamptons, near New York City about 40 years ago.
Presenter Mangold told the Sunday Telegraph: "The Hells Angels were so angered by Jagger's treatment of them that they decided to kill him."
"They planned the attack from the sea so they could enter his property from the garden and avoid security at the front."
"The boat was hit by a storm and all of the men were thrown overboard. All survived and there was not said to have been any further attempt on Jagger's life."
